How to Cure the Monster in Monster in the Mansion

Cure the monster instead of escaping. Learn how hidden books, the antidote, and the cure ritual work, plus the routing that lands a cure.

How to Cure the Monster in Monster in the Mansion

Monster in the Mansion flips the asymmetrical horror formula on its head. In most games like this you run for a door. Here, the win condition is to cure the monster, not escape it. Eight players enter; one is possessed and hunts the rest; the seven survivors scramble through the mansion for hidden books, craft an antidote, and use it on the monster. Understanding that single design choice is the foundation of every strategy on this site.

Why Curing Replaces Escaping

The monster is not an obstacle between you and an exit. It is the objective. An antidote is useless at a distance, so at some point a survivor has to get close to the thing hunting them. That reframes risk: instead of "stay quiet and slip out," the optimal play is "distract it, grab the books, and close in for the cure." This is why our Beginner Guide and How to Survive both stress teamwork over solo sneaking.

Step 1: Find the Hidden Books

Books are scattered across the mansion, usually in rooms the monster patrols. Split the squad:

  • Two or three players run book duty on the far side of the map.
  • One or two players deliberately make noise to pull the monster away.
  • The rest hold objectives or bait chases so the book runners get clean picks.

Books are the bottleneck. If you are not carrying or protecting a book runner, you should be drawing the monster's attention.

Step 2: Craft the Antidote

Once enough books are collected, the antidote becomes craftable at a fixed station. The craft is not instant and it is loud — the monster hears it. Pre-position a guard near the station before you start the craft, and keep a second player ready to body-block if the monster commits.

Step 3: The Cure Ritual

The cure itself requires someone to approach the monster and apply the antidote. This is the hardest five seconds of the round. Best practice:

  1. Lure the monster into a tight room with one exit.
  2. Have the cure carrier wait at the threshold, not inside.
  3. When the monster is mid-chase on a decoy, the carrier darts in, applies the cure, and peels out.

A clean cure ends the round as a win for the survivors. A fumbled cure usually costs the carrier.

Common Cure Failures

  • Crafting with no guard posted at the station.
  • All seven survivors hugging one book, leaving the monster free to farm kills.
  • The cure carrier panicking and using it at max range (it does not work at a distance).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you escape after curing the monster?

No. Curing is the win. There is no exit gate — the round ends when the antidote lands.

How many books are needed for the antidote?

The exact count has not been published for Early Access. Treat "enough books to craft" as your pacing target and adjust as you learn the build.

Can the monster stop the cure?

Yes. If it catches the carrier mid-ritual, the round is lost. That is why the approach is always a planned, decoyed play.
